I just completed an engraved photo book with a living hinge using PG Walnut plywood. It needs some sort of finish on it, but I don’t want to obscure the living hinge. Any suggestions on what to use?
Walnut plywood, like most proof grade materials, is already “finished with a furniture-grade semi-gloss finish.”
What kind of additional finish did you have in mind?
Something to protect it from fingerprints and possibly a semigloss finish. I was thinking about using a spray.
A fixing spray on the engraving will also keep it that level of dark.
You’re going to want to test because a lot of finishes won’t stick to something that’s already finished, but a spray polyurethane would likely get you what you want (if it sticks!)
Thank you
Proofgrade ply comes prefinished with a semigloss shellac finish. Opinions vary widely on this, but many, if not most, woodworkers recommend putting any sort of poly product on top of shellac. I’d be sure to test on some scrap for appearance and adhesion. Good luck!
if you want to spray in just the engraving, it’s best to leave on the masking and spray it on, since that will go just in hte engraved area and not on top of the existing finish. this is what i do when i engrave guitars that already have a lacquer finish on htem.
