Finishing mixed-media project

I recently finished a customized Monopoly set for myself and my wife.

The board and box are mostly engraved plywood, but I embedded colored acrylic for the property board space color bands both on the board and the box top.

Now I want to seal both the box and the board, but I don’t want this final step to ruin the project because of how the acrylic might react to the protective coating.

All the googling I do online (even with “-paint”) is overwhelmed by Q&A about polyurethane and shellac over acrylic paint, so I can’t find anything directly on point about the solid plastic kind of acrylic.

Has anyone ever tried it?

I do have some scraps I can test with, but I am more concerned with the long-term effects that might not show up after a few days to a week of waiting to see how the acrylic reacts.

Thanks!

I would not put sealant over sheet acrylic. It wont look nice and will be easily scratched off. Can you pop the inlays out, seal the wood and then put the inlays back in?

I have already glued the acrylic to the wood, so I think my other option would be to mask the acrylic with masking tape and remove it immediately after spraying each coat.

The acrylic is raised a little bit above the surface of the wood, so there would be no danger of the sealant flowing onto the acrylic after I removed the masking tape.

Thanks for your help!
