First Big Project Done!

Back in 2007 I went on a three week tour of parts of Australia as a leader for junior high students. It was probably the best experience I ever had in traveling. Even though it was quite a while ago, I’ve always wanted to make something to remember the experience. This is what I came up with. I don’t have a Pro, so I had to cut each territory separately and then puzzle them together. The entire thing is custom made including the frame. This would never have been possible without my Glowforge!

I think it looks wonderful with the territories being separate. It may have been more work for you, but I think it adds more than if you just scored or engraved the boundaries.

We’ve been watching a lot of “Escape From the City,” which is all based in Australia. It’s fun getting to see all the different territories, even if it is just on tv. So glad you got to experience it for real!

I love how this came out. Great first big project

Thank you. I agree. Being all separate pieces made the wood look slightly different because of the different grain patterns. I like that because it gives it more depth and texture because each piece stained a little differently as well.

Thanks mate!

What a beautiful work of art to document an amazing adventure! I love the varying wood grains for the territories.

What type of wood is it, and how did you finish the wood?

The wood is 1/8” (3mm) Baltic birch. I got 12 inch squares (48 of them) off Amazon (sold by Cherokee
) for around $65. I sanded with 400 grit sandpaper and then stained it with a classic gray stain. Then two coats of gloss clear to seal it.

This is a stunning piece of art, I love the fact that the laser is so accurate that the coastline meets up perfectly. I’m sure this will be an amazing talking point.
