Found an interesting 20" long chunk of driftwood on the beach. A little under two inches at the thickest point. A quick search for “compass” and a look at Apple Maps for coordinates, now it’s an even MORE interesting chunk of driftwood!
I misted it with water before putting it into the Glowforge, used the medium draftboard settings, had a damp cloth standing by, and focused on a point somewhere in the midrange of the thickness. When it dries, I’ll hit it with some matte sealant, and other than that, I guess I need to keep an eye out for more driftwood!
That came out really well for an uneven surface and density. When I retire some day, I’d like to do stuff like this, but then return the wood to where I got it for someone else to find and puzzle over. Along with hiding fairy doors and other tchotchkes around wherever I happen to be.
I have done something similar, engraving an inspirational quote on the inside of a piece of Cottonwood bark and leaving them on a popular trail to brighten the day of someone paying close enough attention to see it.
@linefeed , nice work! Where do the coordinates point?
*very odd that Google can find the coordinates no problem, but if you click on the link it says they can’t find them - but if I manually replace the + with a , in the link, it finds them…weird.
Also very odd that it shows “Aviva Healthcare Solutions” as that whole building (6 townhouses) but there’s nothing like that there… (At least, not that we KNOW of… Deirdrebeth might have stumbled on a secret healthcare location!)
What a fantastic way to remember where you gather from! Maybe smaller wording at the top to put the beach name, city or something so you can easily remember without having to pull up the coordinates? I love this!
I let the wood dry out in the laundry room (low humidity) for a week before engraving, but misted it with water right before engraving to make sure it didn’t catch fire. The photo was taken just after engraving, then I let it dry again for a few more days before spraying it with a matte sealant.
