FRUSTRATED! Glowforge Plus Stuck on Focussing & not reliable cutting

I wish I heard clicking! At least that would be something. My machine just sits there doing nothing. Believe me; I’ve followed all the cleaning and set-up steps multiple times. I’ve left the lid open to see if it’s downloading a software update, and rebooted everything – including my router.

No luck yet. Nothing has worked. I was able to make 1 cut and 3 engravings – in total. Since then everything stopped.

The machine arm and head never move after turning the machine on. Nothing. They just stay dead where they are.

So sorry. I posted about the clicking hoping it might help you in some way but if your machine isn’t even moving that doesn’t sound good. Have you contacted Glowforge Support?

I assumed opening my new ticket WAS my contact into Support. Am I wrong about that?

If you want to open a ticket, you need to start a new thread with the problems you are experiencing. Piggy backing on a thread started by someone else will not open a ticket with support.

That’s exactly what I did

Interesting. All of mine have clicked a few times before it finishes its centering and returns to the corner ready to go.

I was told it was the lens moving up & down in the head.

Hello Matthewluke - You need to email support@glowforge.com. Go direct to the source. Good luck.

Posting a new thread in Problems & Support ]is the same as emailing except with the addition of lots of potentially helpful suggestions from other GF’ers. You don’t need to post and email as that just slows things down.

I emailed support and got a response within a couple hours. It’s the best route to go when you have a serious issue with your machine.

Yeah… mine never clicks, never centers, never moves to home. Just sits there “Focusing”.

Potential Solution:
So I have been having this issue for about 12 months now, including two times where Glowforge had to send out new black cables for the top camera when it got really bad.

After scouring forums and articles online, I came across the technique of using self-drying Electrical Contact Cleaner Spray.

I carefully disconnected all of the black cables, sprayed them as well as the ports with the Contact Cleaner using the can’s instructions, and left it for an afternoon to dry. I then came back to the machine, plugged everything back in carefully to ensure the tabs were down properly on centred cables etc. and what do you know, it worked! (Pure elation to follow).

Now, of course I can’t promise this will work for you, but it has worked for me multiple times now, so it’s worth a shot to end the madness.

The product I used is WD40’s Specialist Electrical Contact Cleaner Spray, which can be found in most hardware stores where I am in Australia - image attached.

I really hope it works for you!

Chris
