Of course, if you’re just using a normal power strip I can’t see any reason why that would be a problem. And for me personally I’m using a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply), which has surge suppression, so 
But as jbmanning5 said, the official answer given in the past is plug straight into the wall every time.
