Glowforge shipping date, beta releases, and bonus materials

darn, didn’t think of that, wood may likely be seized at NZ customs if they search the box.
Good to hear they are covering the cost of shipping/duty for it, but actual cost value wise of the materials are pretty meager offering (especially if they get taken away by the customs man haha!), further considering it’s a sampler hook to get you into buying more of it.

The interest from when they received payment to when delivery is made will have well surpassed the retail value of $150, so we can’t fool ourselves into believing we’re getting any bonus value here

Of course, these are not news, as we all want it.
As an Engineer I know delays and know that many good features can be added and lots of small Problems can be solved at such a time. I hope Glowforge can keep this Deadline now and I am happy to get a great product!

question, doesn’t the “rise again” portion only really relate when you are getting the exact same “car” after the recall? (or jesus) If Glowforge has had a lot of trouble with the power supply they have been using, and they either change how it’s being built so that it doesn’t have the problem, or they completely change the power supply manufacturer all together (with the same end result) and then thoroughly test it before consumers even get a chance to use it, there essentially is no problem. On a completely unrelated note, however, I’m going to go check my brakes

Would love to get in on all these savings accounts with > 3% APR that suddenly everyone but me seem to have (and to get that relatively high interest apparently only takes an account balance of $4000!).

I mean yes, of course, this serves as a great teaser for the store. But it’s also cool just to have a different set of materials, stuff that I might never have bought.

There are a lot of differences I think.
It’s a good alternative for the german market, especially because the CE-certification and the warrenty.
And if you think about 500$/1000$ for shipping the glowforge from US to germany and about 19% taxes and ~12% customs for the product price and shipping, you think about switching.

Some german backers of the glowforge a scared about a missing CE-cetificate. The result could be that the german customs destroy the glowforge and you have to pay additionaly for the removal.

Yeah me too…Oh no hang on!
That’s a difference of $1800 isn’t it?
If Glowforge did that for everyone Wouldn’t that cost them $18 million?
Wouldn’t that put them out of business and none of us get anything?
We’ve all suffered a setback here and we all are faced with the same choices.

  1. live with it.
  2. get a refund.

Oh and while I think of it.
@dan Whilst it is right and proper for you to have said sorry for the setback, you should be under no illusions that you have let us down.
Letting us down would have been sending us a pile of crap because you bowed to the pressure of getting product shipped, or failing to ever ship. Standing your ground to ensure you send the product that you and all of us want is not letting anyone down.
I will quite happily wait.

Still a bit gutted though.

Bad news for european backers that want to cancel the purchase:

If you ordered you glowforge in october of 2015 you paid ~2270,-€.
If you cancel your payment now you will get ~2175,-€ just because the exchange rate…

I believe Dan said shipping is covered on the complimentary materials. Don’t think duty (if any) was mentioned.

It’s a Country/economy thing. Can’t get any return on your money in the U.S. right now. But then again there are a few Countries out there where inflation is 100% or more per year. Not touching their banking system.

I’ve had some time to think about cancelling and I think I’m staying. I believe Dan will deliver an awesome product when it’s the right time and I can still build my projects at our local makerspace. I do have a question about the free gifts. Can I trade all of my free gifts for an upgraded filter unit?

I was hoping to make a majority of my Christmas gifts this year, but knowing that I’ll have a stable machine that can make gifts for many years makes it all ok with me. Can’t say I might put off buying a couple of the smaller gifts until the last minute just in case it come early, though.

:astonished: Hmm…
No, no, it would probably cost to much to move to New Zealand just to get 3.45% interest.

Does anyone have experience with the carvey or nomad 883 or any other desktop cnc machines? Im thinking about getting a cnc in the meantime. The carveys software looks very simple. I will be doing small inlay work mostly, but I’m sure I will quickly move onto other things. I’m just itching to make stuff ha. @dan I know you have a lot of machines. Any favorites? (I have 0 cnc experience btw)

I have the X-Carve. CNC Milling/machining is a different beast, but a great way to get into these kinds of projects. And they are totally complimentary, and a CNC can do true 3D carving (although must of us do 2.5D in reality). Now as for disappointments there have been some serious shipping problems for Carvey (not getting them out the door, but arriving not smashed up - not sure if that is fully resolved yet) but be ready for mess. Dust collection is so, so, so important with a CNC. Can’t say that enough times. Other than being horrible to breath, my god does it get everywhere. Cut MDF once without some heavy dust collection and you will never do that again. I actually did it in my driveway with a big 3/4MDF sheet, and had to power wash the driveway and my garage doors because even my gas leaf blower couldn’t get the dust fully up (everything was light brown). That being said they are a blast to use. The Carvey should be way less nasty than the X-carve (at the penalty of being smaller and less beefy). If you go on the show off forums on the inventables site you get an idea what people do with it (amazing). Lots of people use both CNC and laser cutters on the same project (CNC to cut in true 3D while laser to engrave). Plus of course you can CNC nasty chlorine based stuff to your heart’s content (see dust above)

Hi Dan,

While the pluses for waiting an extra six months of my time are nice I would like one thing more.

Six months of Glowforge time.

If you all increase the warranty to 12 months for the base unit and 18 for the advanced power I’m in. I’ll wait a week or so and if this is offered I’m in.

Confident this delay increases quality? Should not be a big sacrifice then and supports those who support you.

Best Wishes,
Dave Glotfelty.

I have an XCarve which is a kit predecessor to the Carvey. The Carvey is much more refined and turn key. Love the capabilities of my XCarve and yes you can certainly do quality things like inlays. Both the XCarve and Carvey come with a simple interface called Easel. Easy to use and reasonably effective. You can also use more complex design S/W but using those require some technical abilities or at least an ability to think beyond the simple interface. Keep in mind that the bed is a specific size so think about how big and how deep an object is. I’ll let anyone who knows the Carvey better follow up.

I am disappointed, but wary now. I took advantage of the book offer, but have never seen that so this delay worries me a little, kind of a strike two. I have written before on experiences with Crowdfunding Vessyl, and disappointment with that product. Still nothing there, I hope my experience here is not the same.

Something I might suggest, or ask. If the problem was the power supply, then was the timeline for the software, and say the plug ins for Photoshop, etc., still on schedule? Something that I know would take the edge off me, and get me kinda pumped again is getting my hands on that software and preparing some projects for when I do receive the GF unit. Is this possible? Can we possibly get this in Sept perhaps? Even though there may be later versions or upgrades to the software, we can start playing and planning.

@henryhbk @rpegg thanks a lot for the advice! I have only just started to look a cnc so Ill do a bit more research. The carvey seems to be pretty sweet (as long as it’s not destroyed when I get it). I’m assuming inventables have been working hard on figuring out better shipping methods. In any case I appreciate the feedback!
