I believe each design and creation has their own merit without need for comparisons. I love what you did with this, and I am sure the graduate will appreciate this personalized gift, and will put the box for another good use long after the gift cash is spent.
Sometimes less is more, as in this case where a balance of both really lifts the final design to a new level. Congratulations @rvogt and thanks for sharing.
