How will you become familiar with your Glowforge? (step by step)

What type of info is useful for a materials characterization database? Have used a laser cutter a number of times, but never really had instant access to one. Every project has been a one-of job. With a Glowforge in our studio that will change. So as an early familiarization step: What not so obvious info needs to be included? Currently thinking: Detailed description of material type, material thickness, Laser power, head speed, Laser mode (Cut, engrave, image), raster resolution (if selectable), and of course a description of results. A materials/results database is only a rough guide because many uncontrollable variables will still exist, but should get me close.
