How would you approach this engrave?

If I had that power I would do deep 3d engraving and then pour the next later so it would fill in,

That’s an interesting idea as well. How do you gauge ā€œdeep engravingā€? Is it a power setting?

The same things that make cuts deeper make engraves deeper with a couple added precautions. The grain of many woods vary in how much they are affected and lower power increases that difference, so multiple passes at low power makes it still more extreme.

Fewer LPI increases both grain issues and horizontal issues between the passes, but higher LPI cuts deeper, and lower power just increases the grain differences, so the only other variable is speed, but at 1355 LPI 1000 speed is often not enough. To be more specific, the post would need to be in beyond the manual, but no matter you need to test the settings yourself in any case.

Higher LPI also increases the time it takes to do the job so that might be a consideration as well.

Yes. For ā€œthickā€ Proofgrade materials, there is a ā€œdeep engraveā€ setting that makes two passes, but there are many ways to achieve the same result.

Ok, today is the day! I want to make sure I understand what I’m doing here with this:

  1. Cut out U-2 (black acrylic or a stained black wood)
  2. Cut out Hap Arnold Wings and stars (wood I can paint/stain silver)
  3. Cut out inner and out circles (wood to stain dark)
  4. Engrave inner and out circles and words on plaque
  5. Inlay circles, attach stars
  6. Raise U2
  7. raise hap arnold wings on top of U-2

Does that check?

So the wings go on TOP of the U-2? I thought they were underneath, and showing through it.

In that case, I would inlay the U-2 into the background circle so you have a flat surface to adhere the winds and star to – and maybe make them of a translucent acrylic so the U-2 shows through?

that’s pretty awesome idea. Yea i’ll ask the guy that designed the patch…i guess its one of those ways you look at things. I was considering inlaying either one.

he said the wing design was primary over the U-2 since the Lt Colonel is not specifically a U-2 guy but championed and won an upgrade for it, i might just do one of each, and decide. I’ll keep you guys updated

Hey! So the U2 cut out and engrave went awesome…so did the cut outs from other things, however, how do i seperate the stars, I was going to inlay them but the part of the design has it connected to engraving out the circle as well…am i doing this right?

To make them a separate step, make them a unique color in your design app.

ok everyone, I figured i’d keep you guys updated. This was a tricky one and i had to take several swings at it. Wound up doing inlay and overlay. We think it turned out nice.hap3 hap2 hap 1
