Have you tried steaming the wood with it shut?

Looks like a very loose living hing. Perhaps that is why the fabric reinforcement was required.
Tried it last night. It made the default position for the hinge change. But didn’t reduce the stiffness. I agree with @scatterbrains, im going to look at very long skinny hinges
