I'm looking for a tape that's like packing tape... But stronger, and with stronger adhesive. Ideas?

Is there something that is like packing tape, meaning clear and flexible, while also being tougher and having a permanent adhesive? I am sure there must be, but I’m not sure how to find it. Please LMK if you know a product like this.

Alien tape would probably fit the bill. It’s thicker than packing tape though.

Gorilla Tape is not clear but is stronger adhesive. You can get clear masking tape a foot wide though lasering it has problems. Asking what you want to accomplish becomes very relevant.

I’m making something that’s pretty much two big, thin, floppy pieces of plastic that need to be joined together at a flat edge. The join does not have to be rigid, but when it flexes while being handled the taped seam needs to hold up. And it doesn’t have to look beautiful, just tidy.

There are other ways to make the join but if there is an appropriate tape, it would be the easiest method.

If I could get my 3d printer going I would be looking to make something like an “H” with a double crossover to allow flexibility or try for some of this

This is actually a 3d printed project. I will investigate adding more parts if I have to, but a really kick-ass clear tape, if it exists, would be perfect.

That looks very promising, thanks!

Are you going to let us in on what it is when you’re done? So mysterious!

Yeah, Alien tape definitely fits the bill.

It’s nothing fun, I am trying to repair some old 1980s parts… thin polystyrene panels used for giving special tests. The panels are very large and fragile with age. They are also an irreplaceable component of a system, and need to be repaired/refurbished/rebuilt.

While I asked about tape, I also did a test with Sci-Grip 16 and it did really well on the printed PLA. A thin patch cemented on the hidden side may actually be the way to go, but my box of specialized adhesives and industrial tapes (you have one too, I bet) can always use more options so I will get that Gorilla tape at least.

The “alien” tape looks cool but it all seemed to be double-sided which is not right for this application, at least.

I was thinking a Shoji screen might spark an idea.
