Which if it is might explain a lot. If it is and you can loosely wave the tip of a screwdriver at the height of the fan without having it pull to the magnet then that is indeed a workable alternative to the usual vertical field of most magnets used in that way.

One long flat face is N, the opposite is S.
They cannot be pulled apart, you have to slide them. Several have broken as a result of how strongly they snap together - I use the broken pieces for things like cardstock/paper.
I also have round ones (discs) that are almost as strong.
