Had to get some keys made for the new house and all they had were the boring basic keys. However, I have a glowforge and I don’t do boring and basic, so…
I traced the key and brought it into inkscape for cleanup. A deep engrave on medium maple gave me enough depth to fit the key. Then it was just a matter of flipping the piece and engraving the words on the other side.
Clever idea and they look great. I’d be interested to know how well they hold up if on a keyring with several other keys or getting jiggled around in a purse.
I just realized how great those would be for all the spare keys I have laying in a drawer! I’ve been using key tags, but those just take up a lot of room and there’s the hassle of getting the rings on the keys. With your design, I could just hang the keys on a board without all the little ring tags! So do you mind if I take your idea and make my own?
I wonder how well PG veneer would hold up here? Instead of engraving a pocket you’d just stick the veneer to the key.
Or oo, you’re the master of layered paint. I wonder if you could paint the handle a few layers and engrave an image on it? How well would that work and hold up against key wear?
So grateful I quit using (and carrying) keys a couple of decades ago, BUT this gives me a great idea to “dress up” the keys for a couple of my daughter’s classic cars…
Dang, now that I have a new house and car, there are all sorts of things I wish I could make for myself. I’ll just have to admire all the clever things you make.
I love this idea! I’ve got a couple keys on my ring that need to be identified (I think they go to my Mom’s place), then maybe I’ll label them with Proofgrade.
