Be sure to measure the cutting boards each time because I doubt that any two are the same thickness. Plus of course the wood itself will vary a lot as well. One board may be in the range for Set Focus and another not.

When you’re doing stuff without the crumb tray, the surface of your piece needs to be within 0.5" of the bottom of the print head. If Set Focus is giving you an error, it may be that your material is too far from the head, and that would definitely affect the width of the engravings.
