One piece of leather, three notebooks from Amazon bound in with leather thread. I have to get better at dying. My results are hit or miss. I am OK with this for a personal recipe book though.
If anyone wants to make their own:

The cobalt blue is very pretty–my favorite shade! What dye did you use? I have been using alcohol inks, and find that I get the best coverage with wool daubers… I usually forget to wear gloves and have matching hands for a day or two…
Very nice product.
I am using Fiebings leather dye. I’m not getting consistent coverage, can you see the difference on the front? I’ve ordered some Dye Prep to try and clean the leather a little better. I’m using wool daubers too. I am a big fan of gloves though!
I think it’s gorgeous!
Haven’t done anything with leather since 8th grade. My Mom suggested I make my own dye from walnuts from our tree. I had brown hands for awhile.
Sounds like a cool mom!!
That is really cool!
You may find it kind of evens out a bit, and if not, it gives the cover a nice real-leather, slightly aged look that will just get better with time… I used Fiebings once, before I had my wool daubers, and it came out more uneven than yours, I think because the paintbrush/paper towel method is inferior…
She was indeed the coolest Mom ever! I often think about how much she would have enjoyed the Glowforge.
If you gather the walnuts when they still have the thick outer husk on them, the husk is what makes the best dyes and stains, once removed.
Exactly!
Me too…love the color. I also use the wool daubers and also get colored fingers and hands. I saw a YouTube video though where an expert kind of guy said the best way to get complete and even coverage is to ‘dip’ the leather. That makes perfect sense, but I don’t have the space or volume of dye and containers to do something like that on that large of a scale.
Thanks! I would love to dip it, but like you, I think I’d be wasting it. I do plan on making a number of these in the near future and mailing them around to friends, maybe I will set up a tray to dip them in since I will be doing so many at once.
It looks wonderful. Great idea.
