My nephew’s swim team needed some last minute team trophies for an invitational meet this weekend, so I whipped these bad boys up today. It’s been a while since I’ve done any edge lit projects, but super happy the way these turned out.
You are the cool uncle for sure! The trophies are great.
Can you please explain that to them, I’m pretty uncool in their opinion?
The double layer of water (actually triple) is way cool!
The recipients of them are going to love them. So much better than standard plain placques or trophies.
I like those. It gives me an idea for a. Upcoming company retreat
Those look awesome!
As always @pubultrastar, you really nailed it.
They have so much depth.
I know, right?
All those years with the kids into sports, chess, judo, etc and no laser. A lot of missed opportunity over here.
Wow! So much better than the trophies I got as a kid or participation ribbons.
I love these! The water splash looks so cool!
The way the light hits those splashes is just perfect!
Love these! I’m a newbie. What thickness of acrylic did you use? settings?
The clear acrylic is quarter inch, or the thick clear proof grade from Glowforge, I just used the proof grade settings. The slot for the LED base is thinner than 1/4-in, so I had to engrave that with multiple passes on the tab that goes into the base. The marbled and mirrored acrylic was 1/8-in glued to the clear, and that was cut using just medium proof grade acrylic settings.
Wow, very cool! I have made a few of these edge-lit acrylic pieces but none as intricate as this. Love how you got the stroke of the water and text to glow almost white compared to the engraved contents. If you are willing I would love to see the source files to see how you did this.
Welcome to the community There is a lot of good data here, especially on edge lit stuff. Use the search box to be inundated with info!
Per the FAQ, it’s against forum guidelines to ask for files. If someone wants to provide them they’ll either be linked in the post (like in the Free Laser Designs section), or if they’re offering them for sale they’ll generally have a link in their profile (that you can see by clicking on their icon).
The Navy is engrave, orange is a multiple pass engrave, and pink is cut, mirrored so the engraving is on the back side. To get the halo effect on all the letters, just did a positive offset path and then give it a thicker stroke. The front face letters are then laser cut on the mirrored and marbled acrylic with the original stroke, and glued to the smooth side of the clear acrylic using the engraved letters as a guide.
I am intrigued, thank you!
I really love how the water splashes outside of the sign. Great work.
If I may ask, where did you get your LED light bases?
