Had to try the Coccinelles (ladybugs) pattern mentioned in this weeks ICYMI email…
Engraved on slate from Hobby Lobby ($3.49), coated with shellac prior to engraving.

I just made it yesterday… can’t speak to chipping, but yes it can be washed.
