Lion King theatrical masks

I do a lot of work in local theatre, and when my daughter was cast in Lion King, and the director asked if I’d tackle the masks for the main lions, I put the glowforge to work.

I give you: Scar, Mufasa, Nala, Simba, and Sarabi.

These are layered cardboard, painted, and then glued to flat foam insulation. More insulation is used as a support to mount them to upside-down golf visors, so that the masks will appear to float above the actors’ heads when they wear them. Scar’s mane is 1/8 inch MDF (so that they stay sharp through the whole run) and Simba’s mane is raffia and wooden skewers.

I never saw cardboard look so good! Really a stellar job. I’m assuming the theater folks were highly pleased.
