I would say it’s very likely just the piece or that area that is the problem. I never saw charring like that.

Update: I’ve had success with the Lauan/Miranti plywood! 
I cut two boards with my circular saw and had my kiddos write messages to their Grandmother and turned the Lauan plywood into cute signs for her birthday. I’m so pleased with how these turned out! And I didn’t have to stress over settings. 
I ended up using the PG settings for Thick Maple Plywood and the SD Engrave settings turned out lovely.
Thank you all SO much for your advice and help! I was so discouraged when I couldn’t get this plywood to cut and the GF community has just been amazing!! Thank you all for taking time out of your days and projects to help me!
