When the adhesive ages or is subject to temperature extremes, it can do that. You fight trying to get good stretches of tape without it tearing off at an angle but it’s a PITA and it doesn’t get better. Sometimes despite the waste, it’s better to toss it and break out a fresh roll.

Sunk cost I guess. Probably not worth the aggravation to work with it. Buy a new roll and forge on!
