Making masks and face shields for healthcare workers

Have you heard anything on the hexachloroquin (sp?) treatments?

Iā€™ve been reading about it, interested to see how effective it will be.

Sorry, hubs just walked in. Yeah, I have hopes for it too. That will be the best thing for easing fears.

There are multiple threads, but thereā€™s a team working on facemasks that needs a seattle based laser cutter to help with the prototype

Sorry, I was in the middle of a radio show, lol.
Yes, this drug has been used for malaria treatments in the past, so a lot is already known about it. Thankfully, the FDA fast tracked the approval for use in Covid-19.
I talked to a gentleman today that had the virus and has recovered. He is in much better health normally than I am, and he says he was convinced he was dying. Not good.
On the positive side, he seems to have made a complete recovery and says he feels great. And from start to finish, his illness lasted a little less than 2 weeks.

Had bacterial pneumonia in my early thirtiesā€¦almost killed me. And it hurt. A lot. This is not something to take lightly, I donā€™t care what your age is.

(And Discourse is now scolding me for talking too much again, so itā€™s time to go get some dinner.)

This does not use your GF, but if in your shop or makerspace you have access to a filament 3D printer, there is this: https://3dprintingcenter.net/2020/03/18/copper-3d-makes-the-free-n95-mask-design-to-fight-covid-19-pandemic-spread/?fbclid=IwAR15AVV287S0uqthfELxmp021tBZwYBaHGDEleg6H4wRAVG0GmsOSptmYTg

I really want to wear one of these, but Iā€™m afraid it wouldnā€™t be well received.

My makerspace is partnering with a local hospital to 3D print masks. Not sure I can get my printer calibrated properly enough for that, but Iā€™ve also seen desperate pleas for fabric masks, so Iā€™m going to consider doing some of those. I need fabric and elastic, though, so weā€™ll see if I get out to get it before they shut everything down.

I think old menā€™s tighty whities backsides(well washed of course) perhaps two (or more) layers thick would be close to the need and common enough to be of some volume, and for bonus has elastic included.

Hah. I donā€™t know that itā€™s the best elastic for the purposeā€¦ but now Iā€™ve learned that elastic may not be preferred. We donā€™t have tighty whities lying around, so Iā€™m going to just stick with the fabric. I can use some fun designs at least!

Thereā€™s also this one:

You can scroll down to get the full plans, but they ask that you register on the site, so they can connect you with a hospital that has requested shields.

For swing surgical masks, Dartmouth Hitchcock is requesting

  • 100% unused cotton fabric (front) ā€“ no metallic fabrics
  • 100% cotton or cotton flannel (back)
  • 1/4" or 3/8ā€ flat elastic

Thank you. They are relatively close to me.

I have been getting a lot of requests about making masks and other protection gear to donate to local hospitals. I was initially interested in the 3D-printable mask published by Copper 3D, https://copper3d.com/hackthepandemic/ but realized that it is just ever so slightly larger than my printer build plate. I also wondered whether production time could be shortened by cutting the large flat part of the mask on a laser.

So I modified their design and am testing this out now. The filter housng is 3D-printable, and the face shield is meant to be cut from thin vinyl.

I would be interested in hearing feedback from health professionals about the potential pitfalls of these makeshift mask designs.

I would too. Iā€™ve seen a lot of the 3D printed headband w/plastic sheet face shields out there but Iā€™ve also heard from more than one doctor saying those arenā€™t a big issue because they can be cleaned and sanitized fairly easily. Itā€™s the filtering masks and respirators that are the big need. Hard to tell if the face shields are really needed or if itā€™s an urban myth perpetrated by folks who want to be useful.

Here is another face mask (not shield) design that was featured in our local news. It features a removable insert made of MERS 16 furnace filters or HEPA vacuum bags:
