Is that simply painted a solid color, and the smoke does the shading, or did you handpaint it all?
I wanted to compliment you on the paint job & using the black card–the shading and details with the veins is fabulous–I almost expect them to start curling up! But @evansd2 comment made me pause and think this is even more brilliant if you took advantage of what’s often a problem into helping you get the great coloring! (Also appreciate the irony, too!).
I let the smoke do the shading. It usually works against me, but not in this instance.

That turned out really nicely. Many times smoke shading doesn’t work nearly so well.
