Material engraves to different colors at different depths?

I have a piece of very thin flexible material that has multiple copies of a test message, but when engraved at different depths it shows different colors. My thought is that it’s ideal for making bookmarks. It wound up in our Glowforge project sample drawer when my predecessor left, and I’ve got no idea what it is or where she got it.

I’ve searched for something like it without luck, so I thought I’d toss it out here to get some hints. Any ideas?

Layered acrylic is definitely a thing.

Depending on the colours you may be able to narrow down the supplier, but here’s one place:

Thanks for that tip. This stuff is just a little thicker than the thin Proofgrade leather, which is really what’s confounding me!

Is it black on top? Could it be scratch board? The messages wouldn’t change color with depth, but they would be different colors in different areas. Easy to make with just paint on any laser able surface.

Side and front. Now that I can actually hold it, it looks more like the rubber stamp material, but I haven’t found anything like that either.
