This project took me a long time! It was very hard to design and I’m super proud of it. I was inspired by my old pencil box from childhood. I wanted to recreate it with a middle divider and then decided to make it into a mimic box.
I believe the middle divider hinge is a first for the laser custting community. I have never seen anyone design anything like it. LMK if you have. The latch is also unique. It’s a dovetailish kind of latch that uses magnets to stay in place. Very strong!
Super proud of this one. It was the most complex project I’ve done so far! Let me know what you think!
What’s new is the way that incorporates the middle layer into that hinge. I saw this post on Reddit a little while back and noticed the hinge for being pretty innovative in that way.
Yeah I definitely haven’t seen anyone do basically a 2nd lid with the middle hinge, and I love the mimic!
You could add a thin leather “tongue” to give you something to grab to switch the middle lid over - unless it’s easier than it looks
It’s just birch or pine stained. Oak would look nice!
The hinge part is not new for sure. It’s more the middle divider design. I’ve never see that incorporated into a box like this before. But maybe I’m wrong. Either way it was fun to work on!
It is so hard to come up with something original in the laser cut world! I really think this is a first for a design. But there’s probably someone who has had the same idea lol.
I’ve gotten so many comments about adding a tongue. Really wish I could have done something but maybe I’ll add it in the future. Always room for improvement! Thanks for the kind words and idea!
Appreciate it sir! I was pumped when I came up with the middle divider. I plan on making some generic boxes and incorporating it into other designs. Just know you saw it here first!
The dividers and hinged separator/wall/whatever in the middle are super cool. Lots of thought put into this design and the execution, it’s up there with Vasily39’s box designs (which I’ve purchased several of)!
