Ink loves to wick up the wood fibers. It’s really hard to contain or get clean edges

To prevent capillary action from bleeding pigment into the open wood fibers I have used an artist’s brush to paint a clear finish on the edges of the engrave to seal them.

I’ve done a deep score around what I’m going to stain and filled that with clear paint (nail polish is easy if you’re only doing a single project) so if the ink does bleed it’s below the lowest level of the score.
