Movies / Shows to Stream (and books?)

Anyone have any good recommendations right now of things to stream?

Last night we watched A House of Dynamite on Netflix and wow, the ending was very disappointing. I’m still kinda mad about that. Tonight we needed a laugh, so we watched a super cheesy zombie movie - The Elixer (also on Netflix). The ending was decent, no disappointment here. We all laughed a lot and yelled at the screen. Sometimes cheesy movies are great.

I really liked The Mayfair Witches (season 1 on Netflix) and I’m looking forward to the release of season 2 in a little over a month. I enjoy this season and creepy shows. And I guess it’s been renewed for season 3.

Has anyone watched the series from last year Interview with a Vampire? I wasn’t really a fan of the movie back in the 90s (but I should rewatch it sometime and see if my opinion holds true). But I’m intrigued by the idea of watching the series. While I’m a fan of reading horror stories, I don’t think I’ve read any Anne Rice. I just finished a book last night, so maybe I’ll look for something from her to read next.

Interview was outstanding. I liked it much more than Mayfair. (I’ve read both series)

K-Pop Demon Hunter. Not going to lie, I’ve watched it by myself an embarrassing amount of times…

I read a lot of Anne Rice, I think my favorite was the Vampire Lestat. I read a lot, but now I can’t remember anything except that one.

I don’t like ongoing stress from TV series, so I don’t watch them unless they are light hearted and entertaining. So I watched Wednesday. Right now I’m watching Culinary Class Wars. I think I’m almost done with it. I don’t really know if I like it, but it’s entertaining.

This is why I struggled with season one of the bear and never went back to season two or later.

You might like Better Things, it’s what I like to call “kind tv”, and it sounds like you might like it as much as I do.

I haven’t watched KPop yet. I’m glad to hear you like it, hopefully I will. I wonder if my daughter will like it

She is going to be disappointed soon because our Black Friday Hulu / Disney+ deal is going to end next month. This girl watches Bluey every single day. I got her the discs for Christmas, but it’s a pain, I’ll have to rip them but I don’t know if I still have everything I need to rip discs anymore. Maybe I can get my husband to figure it out, I don’t feel like dealing with that right now. I don’t know if Disney will have a deal like that again ($3 per month for a year) but that’s the only way I would keep it. At least some Bluey is on YouTube. That will help. :slightly_smiling_face:

Which is why a significant portion of my list would be available primarily on Crunchyroll.

+1 for Interview

+1 for Wednesday

I like when there are whole seasons I can watch when it’s convenient.

  • The Bear - watched first couple of episodes with my husband but he got bored with it and I haven’t gone back to watch it by myself
  • Wayward - have watched the first half or so, love it
  • Wednesday - waiting to watch the second half of most recent season with my son, he better hurry up and be ready or I’ll watch without him. lol
  • Slow Horses - watching this with my husband
  • Silo - we all watch this together, annoyed that it’s taking so long for next season
  • Invasion - we all watch this together

I’ll recommend MakeMKV for ripping disks, it’s free and does a great job.

For shows we’re really enjoying Cloak & Dagger on Disney, though it’s dark. It’s targeted at teens, but that it no way limits it.

I’ll echo K-Pop Demon Hunters, so good!

If you have interest in older shows the rebooted Quantum Leap is lovely

I don’t like/watch/read horror stuff at all, so I can’t help you there. Usually we just watch the basics - Survivor, The Amazing Race, 99-to-1, Dancing With the Stars, and a large variety of cooking competitions.

For ripping disks I use DVDFab. It does cost, and I only have the basic DVD/Blu-Ray rippers, but I know they’ve expanded to all kinds of streaming services. I bought a lifetime plan, so I only paid for it once (one for DVD and one for Blu-Ray). I use it to rip all our disks and transfer them to an external drive that I plug into the tv. I have everything divided by category - action, adventure, comedy, family, sci-fi, western, etc. Figured that was easier if I was in the mood for a specific type of movie, and much less to scroll through to find the one I want. We have almost 800 movies.

@deirdrebeth - I’ll have to check out MakeMKV!

I usually don’t watch anything. Except on Crunchyroll. But my list on there is now just One Piece and Gintama. I’ve invested almost 20 years watching One Piece. I finished watching Gintama years ago, but we turn on random episodes every so often for laughs.

The list used to be a lot longer, but I’ve avoided picking up newer shows because of my binge watching habits…I can’t go days without sleep anymore.

If you haven’t watched Love and Monsters, that is a fun action comedy movie from 2020 that I just rewatched last night. Still good :+1:

And for a good book series, Senlin Ascends, Johannes Cabal(every book gets better!) ,and The Murderbot Diaries are great. I have not watched the Murderbot TV shows, but the books are hilarious.

“Murderbot” was far more entertaining than I thought it was going to be. A lot less murder and more comedy. I really thought it was poorly named, but that is kind of the point.

Like I said, I haven’t watched the series, but in the book it explains the reason for the name Murderbot is that is the private name that the Sec Unit calls itself. Because a huge chunk of its memory was deleted in relation to a rather murderous incident, and it is also very depressed and sick of this ****.

I was really skeptical when Skarsgard was cast for Murderbot (because he’s such a “he” and Murderbot is definitely an “it”) but I’ve been pretty pleased with how it’s been filmed. The books are definitely my preference though!

We watched some of murderbot but honestly I was busy with other stuff and didn’t pay that much attention.

i can go for days without watching tv but if left to my husband, we rewatch stuff over and over and over that I just can’t stand to hear on the tv anymore. So I watch strategically so I don’t have to watch things like Fifth Element for the 2000th time. lol

I’m the same – barely watch any tv, but boy do we watch a lot of YouTube on our living room TV. I just watched two versions of Nosferatu for Halloween, the first silent one, and then a remake from the 70s. Can’t say I would recommend either though:wink::sweat_smile: But I did stumble across “Tucker and Dale vs Evil” from 2010, and think it would be a great movie to watch for Halloween. I do enjoy comedy horror

LOL! We literally just finished watching Tucker & Dale, it’s a perennial favourite at my house!

We’re going for Shawn of the Dead as a follow-up

I love 5th element. I wouldn’t mind watching it for 2000 times…my husband watches Transformers on repeat…that’s one I don’t need to see again.

Like I said, I’m not a horror movie fan, although I can handle some sci-fi ones. My main movies I watch, more like listen to because I’ve watched them so often I know what’s happening without having to see it, is A Knight’s Tale, The Princess Bride, Ladyhawke, Man From Snowy River, the newer Star Trek movies, Star Wars IV, V, and VI, and musicals like The Pirates of Penzance, Hello Dolly, and The Fiddler On The Roof. And, of course, most of the Disney movies, especially Anastasia, Beauty and the Beast, Moana, and Mulan, even though we don’t have kids in the house.
