I designed these 7 engraved wooden coaster featuring a different iconic polyhedral die outline — including D4, D6, D8, D10, D12, D20, and a full set design. I was inspired by a rustic, fantasy tavern vibe.
The diameter is 4 inches and was made on 5mm Columbia forest 5mm mahogany.
I used a small propane torch to burn the edges and then stained them with an oil based stain.
Super simple but really happy with how they turned out. Do you like them? Any advice on how to seal them?
Love the fake wood grain. I’ve made a few things using that for decoration. I typically use maple ply, which is almost like a sheet of blank paper, so it jazzes things up a bit.
One quart can of satin minwax poly was barely touched in all the years I had it - a little goes a long way! I would dip smaller items… It’s top of my list to replace!
It’s an oil stain. You might not need additional sealing.
Also a limited lifespan isn’t a bad thing for coasters. These aren’t family heirlooms, they’re meant to be used and ultimately replaced. You might sell more if they last a reasonable time but you definitely won’t sell any more if they last forever.
Besides, these are meant to be rough-looking and aged. Use might improve that quality?
Thanks! I like the look of the fake wood grain also. Adds some depth to stuff and is easy to add. I also sometimes use maple but have been switching it up recently to try new things.
You also could incorporate the burns into the engraved design. It’d save you a step and be very consistent. Otoh there’s a nice analog aspect to doing by hand.
