My over-the-top snap together project - it's taking forever! lol

It’s a sickness…as soon as read that I got on the computer. I think I have a solution too. I’ll test it out and let everyone know. But I love the skewer idea!!!

Nice!!! Love that!

Very cool, and I dig the must-be-pure-GF approach! I have started cutting myself slack for easily obtained items like toothpicks…

It’s not making the tiny roller bearings, it’s getting them all into the race and none falling over. I wonder how many you need for a good safe fit. (Hmm, maybe a planetary-gear-style setup, just with no attachments.)

I’ve used bamboo skewers, and I just got some precision tiny dowels (from Lee Valley, I think) but my hinge-pin material of choice is 3D printer filament. Have essentially infinite amounts, and the leftover 3mm is just going to waster…

A-MAZE-ING! I can’t even imagine!!!

LOL. I couldn’t either. But I had an idea and wanted to see if I could do it. I know there are others out on the market, but I really like to push myself to design cool things.

Please tell me you’re now going to try this so I don’t have to :stuck_out_tongue:

The “pins” you made to keep the pieces together are very impressive

Thanks! I was a little worried they would be too pliable. I beefed them up a little and they work great now.

I am sooooo impatient. When is the big reveal for the finished project?

LOL. When I get the rest of the material to finish running the job. Trust me I want it done too!

WOW!!
I completely love it. It is ASTOUNDING! Is the axel rounded somehow? I see the bearing, and love it.
I was asked to make a prize wheel for my child’s classroom, now I feel like I need to up my game. DANG.

It is stunning and wonderful. I would love to see the video of the motion. (and obviously the completed piece) Once the Ferris wheel is done, can you start working on a carousel ? I would be interested to see how you produce the music. Oh and of course a working roller coaster, as no glowforge amusement park is complete without those!

Seriously though, absolutely wonderful.

Thanks. The supports for the axel are flat. They are held by the legs. The bearings rotate around a circle that is attached to the support. There are spacers on either side that hold the bearings in, and keep the wheel attachment in-line. I thought about a roller coaster and carousel. I need to finish this one before I start the next…lol

This is over the top impressive… since you guys are so great with snap pieces, let me as a question! I’m still new to GF and I used a box maker creator online to make a little planter box with the finger joints and they’re too big. All the dimensions I used were accurate. I used PF walnut. I previously made a wine box from a GF owners SVG file and it was amazing. Snapped together and it wasn’t coming apart. Now I can’t seem to replicate. Any advice on getting the finger joints to sit snugly?

It’s all about the kerf adjustment. Which box maker did you use? It may be called a few things, like “kerf” or ”cut width”, if you let us know which one you’re using we can help you figure it out if it’s not obvious.

How much adjustment to use is somewhat dependent on your material and settings. 0.006-0.008” is a good range for “tight” fits for most 1/8” materials but you’d have to test a little to be sure.

Thank you so much! I’m using makercase. I read through this whole thread and will adjust the kerf. Thanks!!!

What program did you use to design it?

Designed entirely in Illustrator. It’s the only program I design files in.
