Wow. Webb pictures.

Wow there are miniatures and then there’s this:

It’s long but the details about how this thing works is pretty insane. They show the inner workings of the circuit boards and the cars and it’s way more complicated than I would’ve expected at first but now that I see what it can do I can’t imagine how you could’ve done it more simply.

Each car acts autonomously to an extent, with parameters to control its performance. For example, modifying the properties of a car’s tires in the software will make it act differently in the race. Pretty amazing.

This is wild and technically laser related but way more than Glowforge lasers. A 3d display made with lasers:

Closer and closer to making sci fi real! I give it a week after they achieve large scale until sometimes tries to stay in it long enough to get burned “for pleasure”.

Or someone tries to give themselves a tattoo with it.

@hansepe, did you see these images from the Euclid telescope? They’re crazy, it’s just wild to think about everything we’re going to learn.

Thank you. I was just looking at those last night and actually have the website open in my browser right now!

ESA - Euclid’s first images: the dazzling edge of darkness

There is a YouTube from ESA discussing the images too.

Somebody came up with a way to direct google searches away from AI stuff…it worked for me using my DuckDuckGo browser and going to google.com. The only issue right now is it also delivers sites that are talking about the new feature :stuck_out_tongue:

A Konami Code for the new generation :stuck_out_tongue:

I was just looking at that on a different site, this story is kind of floating around from a A few different outlets. The problem I have is that I do a lot of searching on my iPhone and I don’t know how to change the default search options there. You can only put in a search engine from a drop-down, you can’t do it as a custom URL. I should google that and see if it’s possible.

I just add the &udm=14 text to my search bar by the search. Whether I’ll remember that in a month is a different question!

Oh boy, it’s an America’s Cup year!

If you’re not the sort of person that has really kept up with high-end yacht racing, Gone are the days of sailing teams working in secret to make surprise boat designs that crush the competition through one or two innovations. The rules now state that boats have to be built to very strict standards, keeping the contest more about sailing skill. the current class is called the AC75, 75-foot monohull hydrofoils that fly across the water. It’s really pretty insane — more like F1 than street racing.

The American boat this year has been revealed, it has the emphasis on aerodynamics while also adhering to the strict specifications that all the boats in the races have to follow. Here’s a quick reveal video and discussion with the crew.

The racing starts in August. It’s going to be very cool.

Smh, I would favor something more useful. Like if the race were held in Hawaii and they had to sail there to be in the race. To put up all that money for a single use, old tech next year and useless for anything else. I really like sailboats, and have had a few, but that only technically fills the bill by having sails.

The good news is that there are plenty of really good traditional sailing races for you to enjoy as well!

From local regattas using small boats with twitchy controls and heavily reliant on traditional sailing skills all the way up to trans Atlantic world record attempts using traditional yachts, sail racing is still really big if you go looking.

Heck, this race finished today:

More races:

And this is just one racing club. Dig deeper and you’ll find any kind of sailing race you want. There’s a tall ship race series in 30 days!

It’s also an Olympic year. Olympic sailing is a blast to watch, there are ten (or so) events this year including kitefoiling. It’s going to be cool

Yes, I have been in a few actually, from sunfish, to geriactric (they weren’t called that but I don’t remember what they were called) in the Columbus Day Regatta. The parties at night were fun but I found the races boring. I did assist a friend taking what was at the time one of the fastest catamarans with the cross section area in the water perhaps 2 sq-meters and 1500 sqft of sail with the boat 35" long and 30’ wide so when it turned one hull would often go backward. From Miami to the middle Keys took a day and a half, because the wind never got up to 5MPH which was good as I don’t know that two people could handle it in a real wind.

It was apparently an early version as it had a place on the deck like a tiny tent only in fiberglass and beds in each of the two hulls, but otherwise was just deck. Buddy Ebson designed it and apparently called a later design Polynesian Concept but this one really was with only the tent thing sticking above the canvas deck, otherwise similar to my 12’ cat except it was 35’ and each hull more slender in proportion.

The final result is cool - the build is so far outside my experience! I mean, I build PCs, but mostly from parts that, you know, fit! :stuck_out_tongue:

yeah, i couldn’t begin to build that.

but if i won the lottery, i’d be willing to pay him to build me one.

Definitely insane! Imagine trying to sell your interior design skills. Add a hidden AI like an advanced Rabbit-R1. you sit down on what looks like a normal table so you give a hand command and the screen pops up. Ask them how they want their coffee and two cups drop down from the ceiling, and they are either struggling to get the money out of their pocket or six blocks down the street still screaming.
