Seen this the other day in a group. I suggest keeping an eye out on your laser when in use.
This is the fire I’ve been dreading to see — when someone really torched the room/house, not just the machine.
Was this a Glowforge?
They never said what machine it was. Just seen it in a group shared by another group.
This is why I am sitting right next my laser anytime it is running! You should never leave it unattended when running.
It’s definitely worth reminding users of the danger.
Btw, this isn’t a new photo, it’s been floating around FB for at least four years…
For all we know it’s not even a laser fire. People make stuff up for engagement all the time.
The real fire is social media.
Amen, brother!
I will put the photo in my file just in case I need a good aftermath photo. Use it in 5 years or so…ug
I had no idea. I guess just people seeing it and resharing over time.
Still…I don’t understand why people think it’s ok to walk away, unless some emergency happened like my kid was in a life-threatening situation, I never leave it’s side when it’s in use. Even then I am just a couple of steps away from pausing it and then I can run off worry-free.
I do - not far, and not for long - and not until I see it’s happily moving along, but I do. So far I’ve been lucky.
I do keep a camera on it, and check that regularly.
I’m a paranoid person I guess. Lol (sometimes circumstances just make a person like that lol)
I could probably use a small dose of paranoia. I tell myself it’s a bad idea, and have visions of the horror…but I still do it.
I think people underestimate the role that proper settings, proper air assist maintenance, and proper svg design play in fire risk.
You can make a fire prone svg easily if you don’t know what increases risk. You can use incorrect settings — slower is riskier. You can have an air assist failure, greatly increased risk.
That being said anything could happen. Your belt might snap causing the laser head to stop moving. Your masking could lift up and catch fire as it blows around. You might hit a void in your plywood that is more prone to fire. It’s a good idea to keep an eye on things.
the only stuff i walk away from w/o hitting pause is non-flammable stuff, like tile. i may be on the other side of the room, but i’m always where i can see and hear if it’s flammable.
but, to be fair, i do a lot of my engraving while i’m literally at my desk working from home which is literally right next to the GF. like “i could accidentally bump it with my elbow” close.
I saw a cool product that someone was “influencing” for their RV, it was a fire extinguisher ball that was made to look decorative so it would fit in. Supposed to explode with fire suppressing chemicals when it reaches a specific temperature. Thought that might be a good idea to have near a laser cutter, in case the whole thing does catch fire, it could limit the spread.
Heh.
Wonder if the RV one is a competitor, or just a different market.
*Edit,
Looks like there are a bunch of them now!
