For design, I use Fusion 360 because it is very powerful. A bit of a learning curve but there are many great tutorials on laser cut design on youtube. I used to use google sketchup with an svg export plugin as it was very easy to use but it doesn’t allow rounded edges and is difficult to make changes to your design. All you gotta do is build your model in 2d planes with your material thickness and once you get the hang of it, it becomes easy and fun! Also, I recommend using a micrometer when designing not only for practical use designs but to also get a sense of scale while you are designing.
