Perfect Alignment Every Time - The Fiducial Alignment Ruler (design in post)

Snap marks was the only thing that gave me the confidence of reliable, consistent output when attempting to properly align things with the glowforge.

I’m really surprised they havent done more with the head cam to increase reliable placing of designs. Aligning to the head of the machine is really the only way to know you will be getting accurate results.

Would love to see them revive snap marks and give everyone better quality output

IIRC, they only tried testing on certain machines that they knew were able to do it well based on their logs (or something like that). it was part of the testing that led to implementing the passthrough software. not sure what the issue was with other machines. i can’t imagine they wouldn’t have implemented it, even as a premium feature, if it would work on all machines well.

Yeah they never went into details WHY it wouldn’t work, but if they did it would have probably uncovered hardware faults where they didn’t want to deal with the return/exchange process of those units.

Happy that I was one of the people that had access to this, but it should have been possible on every machine.

i feel like they kinda implied that not every machine would be able to do it properly. but i don’t think they outright said that. and yeah, i’m sure there would be even more unhappy people who got it and it didn’t work than where we are now, where only a few got to test it and it wasn’t rolled out officially.

I’d be tickled pink if someone is more pull than I get them to do this, snap marks isn’t for every project but when it’s usable, it’s great.

Here’s to hoping! :crossed_fingers:

I’d volunteer to be a “it’s fine with me if my machine can’t do it, but can I at least TRY it” tester. I have been wanting to give it a go for years and if it isn’t great for me, I’m no worse off.

As it is the Passthrough appears not always reliable. I still use the process I developed before there was any of that which allows for overlap instead of a straight horizontal line. Anywhere there is an open space it is much better to put the divide there, and try to cut continuous lines where they are vertical and a millimeter error won’t show.

Btw  hi @takitus

I do that when cutting Adam’s Ready board. Cut details at each end and the center then continue the long straight lines.

I love snapmarks. I have been using on pencils and pen jigs. I am almost afraid to post about it as I am afraid they will take away.

Only if your machine has to be replaced.

Would LOVE to see that offered in the Design Catalog so everyone would see it!

There is no point unless glowforge decides to resurrect the project. At least 90% of the machines don’t have Snapmarks active.
None of us have been able to convince them that they need this to be a thing

Can you tell me what is your ruler made of and where is the snap adjustment

I’m new to this but if I understand correctly, You include the ruler in your design and then you align the ruler of your design with the actual ruler on the crumb tray.
I also noticed wood beneath your project. Do you keep a piece of wood on your crumb tray at all times for some reason

I am so sorry but this was about a beta feature that no longer exists. The good news is there are a lot of other ways to precisely align your work.

That’s how it used to work yes.

Essentially the concept was that the camera on the head will always be accurate because it’s fixed to the laser output. The camera on the lid is not always accurate (or rarely ever was)… especially for very precise alignment. Using snapmarks forced the synchronization of positioning between the lid and head cameras, thereby ensuring almost perfect cut/engrave placement. It’s a shame they never took this further. I used it constantly. It took years of hounding to even get it into the product to begin with lol

I didn’t have wood in my laser bed. That was my desk, just for taking photos
