First I made size samples out of cardboard, and found that 1.75" was the winner.
I then took some of the koa I picked up from @amandarogers808 and did a positive and negative engrave of our family’s icon, added a2nd layer of wood, sanded and finished with tung oil.
They looked gorgeous, but at a quick glance they were surprisingly hard to tell apart!
We might eventually do a clear resin over the tops so the dark pieces stop gathering dust in their grooves…but I’m not laying odds on that happening before the heat death of the universe
Nice! These are pretty cool! I think you could spray some coats of clear coat and it would fill in the engraving. I’ve done it before (especially with Rustoleum Triple Thick Glaze, comes out really nice with several coats on it). I can’t use epoxy.
It helps that we both play in a medieval recreation group, so we each had Arms from there, this is a combination of their compass star, and my fret knot. I love it so much
How cool is that?!! I so love that you could take a flea market find and personalize it in such a great way! From reading just the title, my first thought was that you’d just personalized the box. Then I saw the pics and your gorgeous playing pieces! The design is absolutely lovely!
