We have one of the new machines with the red wire covering… guess what? It doesn’t work! Red wire still has a hole! And of course, GF wants to charge for a refurbished model even though this is a factory defect they are WELL aware of!
Reach out to Jonathan Gleich on Facebook. He fixes a lot of these.
I did and it’s back up and running but it’s kind of ridiculous that Glowforge knows about this issue and even their “fix” didn’t work and their only solution is to have someone shell out 1600$ for a refurbished one.
Glowforge does not offer a fix for this problem. They would never suggest that a user open the machine and work on the HV cable.
No they would not, they would prefer to keep this known defect in their machines and charge people to get refurbished ones. Then fix the simple $20 wire and resell the machine for $1500 as refurbished.
And the fix I was talking about in the original post was the glowforge fix of covering the red wire with a black sheath. The newer machines have the red wire covered as the factory “fix” but it does not work.
Very few, if any, owners here on the forum have direct knowledge of Glowforge’s manufacturing modifications. The forum is only made up of users. Glowforge support does not monitor the forum so you will need to contact them directly.
By the way, I wish you did not include scripture with your posts.
Glowforge is aware, I was just warning others. And I’m sorry you don’t like my scripture. You aren’t forced to read them. The internet is full of filth and vulgarity so I don’t think a few verses will hurt anyone.
i’m not a fan of signatures in general. it’s not relevant content in the thread and your signature is longer than any of your posts. seeing it in every post makes the thread unnecessarily long, whether someone wants to read it or not.
You sail in here and make your first and only post searching for an avenue to propagate your rage against the company? You won’t find much fertile soil here for it. Clinging to that animosity isn’t healthy.
Thanks for taking the time to contribute, it does help everyone to know about the arcing issue.
Every online space has its norms and tone, it’s too bad that things have gotten off on the wrong foot here. The internet definitely has some darker corners but I think you’ll find that this is a much brighter space than most. Hopefully we can ride out these bumps as everyone gets to know each other a bit, and talk some more about your wiring issue.
You say the red wire has a hole, did it arrive from Glowforge that way, or did it happen after some time as you used it?
Do you have any photos of the defect? Was there any sign of wear or damage to the wires otherwise? Can you show the area where you think the wire may have been touching the Glowforge? I wonder if it was a rough or sharp area that wore through or if the insulation simply wasn’t enough for the voltage?
If you can provide this info it may help someone avoid issues in the future.
Hey no worries. The machine is about a year and half old. Came from the factory with the upgraded red wire covering. You can see in the pic my husband actually had to cut away the black covering to find the hole.
Not forbidden, just broadcasting your beliefs is totally unnecessary. That’s just my opinion. Your report on the wire is welcome, and appreciated.
There are few things in life that can cause more friction and troubles than discussing politics and religion, so we like to keep those two topics out of our forum…for the very reason that you’re seeing right now in the reponses. I truly don’t believe that your personal beliefs ‘offend’ anyone in here…it’s just that it’s not the proper place for them to be shared. It’s pretty hard to miss them when they’re on the bottom of everything you write…and if we scroll past them…then we are also scrolling right past the actual reason for your post.
Closing this topic due to the amount of flags that it has received.
