Removing blue painters tape residue

I used blue masking tape for unfinished plywood. Boy, am I sorry. It left so much sticky residue on my project that I don’t know what to do. I actually sprayed the wood with a clear coat before applying the tape, but I have a mess. The clear coat was long dry. Should I not mask the other sheets? I don’t want scorching on the project. TY

Depending on the type and sheen of the clear coat, you may not need masking. Use some to engrave without it, and see if the scorching wipes off with a simple baby wipe or wet rag. If it doesn’t wipe clean, use a lower tack paper masking instead of the painters’ tape, similar to the masking Proofgrade wood comes with.

I have used that blue masking tape off and on since I purchased some narrow and wide versions several years ago, I have found a universal solvent for sticky that does not affect most spray gloss and some folk here are tired of hearing about it, but I have been using retail hand sanitizer for a great many jobs ( I found some industrial stuff that was bad for hands or surfaces).

If you get a rag or paper towel wet with sanitizer, you can wipe the sticky away. If I use it too much It can warp thin plywood, but with weights and a flat surface it will dry flat again as alcohol evaporates and takes water with it (I use dive weights on a big tile but any similar will do).
