Running Man

I’ve always loved automata. Some years ago, after studying many books on mechanical movements, I designed my own original automata that I call “Running Man”. I don’t know if his motion is really running, perhaps it’s more of a jog or a speed walk. Nevertheless, that is how I know him.

I decided to try making him out of acrylic on my Glowforge. I don’t have the discipline to carve his hands, feet and head, so those are courtesy of my 3D printer.

Anyway, here he is. Running. Or jogging. Or speed walking. Take your pick.

Slow motion running  I love that his toes point as he’s stretching forward!

Thank you, but I’ll admit that I’ve had my GF since January 2018. I’m going to convert him to a motorized version next and save all that effort on turning the crank!

Actually, they are Vex Robotics sprockets and chain. I had tried pulleys and belts and several other approaches, but the Vex stuff gave me the best performance.
