i was able to order a new black cable for that day in the future…which now will never come because i got a black cable for that day in the future.

A bunch of folks have needed a black cable. If the shop is out of stock, they will invariably offer to buy one from an owner that may have squirrelled one away as a spare.
A starting offer from a stranger should be at least twice the original price plus shipping. Not just an offer to buy it.

Best way to not need insurance is to have it. That is my opinion on investing in various forms of it over half a dozen decades.
