Side Project – Celtic Knot Graphite Rubbing

Have you ever been making something and, suddenly had an idea for an entirely different thing to do with it? Blackwing graphite pencil rubbing on rice paper of my Snowflake Celtic knotwork mandala design laser-etched in Baltic birch.

Experimenting with materials/technique is some of the most fun I have had. :sunglasses:

I used to hand-draw resists onto copper plates and etch them to make rubbings:

Using the Glowforge is a LOT easier.

I had two steel plates bolted together about a foot apart and just got a nice short hydraulic jack of about two tons lift I also have a nice roll of 4 oz soft copper sold for flashing. Now I am just looking for a slab of rubber and steel I can fasten to the jack.

I have been thinking that with a deep 3d engrave on hard wood placed between the steel and rubber with the soft copper might yield interesting results.

That does sound promising! I’ll be excited to see your results.
