The box joint is the interlocking tabs cut in the wood for joining the pieces together.

Actually, the tray was made to hold some tools I keep in a cabinet but it just happens to fit the Magic card decks perfectly.

I keep a few tools within easy reach in a cabinet. This was the original purpose for the tray.
