I don’t know anything about Sketchup, however this video is pretty impressive.
For generating things for the laser would that fit under the free model?
I have never entered the world of cad, so have kept my life 3-D printer free as of now, would this be a good tool to start with if I needed yet another hobby?

Sketchup is my 3D tool of choice at work but I mostly deal with scenery and other things made of flat planes. Not sure if the free plan allows extensions?
Blender is free and very powerful for just about anything 3D but the learning curve is high.
For more sculptural things I like Nomad Sculpt for iPad+pencil.
