Small box with wraparound artwork

Here is a small box I made featuring wrap around engraved art. The coloring is soot from the burning process which was rubbed into the wood using a toothbrush. I sealed it with oil based polyurethane finish.

This looks wonderful. I’m sure whoever gets (or sees) this box will love it!

Meranti plywood?

Excellent result.

Very interesting use of the effects of the engraving soot as a part of the design instead of cleaning it up.
Nice piece!

Luan. Very sooty when engraving.

Thanks. This comes from that “if you can’t beat em, join em” place.

I have found the underneath bits of Luan pretty ugly when I attempted to engrave it but a scored design cleaned up well.

FYI, lauan is meranti plywood, so yup!

I actually don’t use it much because it chars so badly. That being said, like many mahogany variants it engraves nice and dark.

Here I am clicking through the new the posts… “Oh that is nice.” “No comment.”

Then I come to this one… “Oh! Wow!” (my exact words) and then I lean forward to get closer to the monitor to see the detail!

Excellent work! I have always wanted to do a box that such great detail.

Nice way to “lean in” to what others might call a downside. As an engineer, our slogan is: If you can’t fix it, feature it!

Seriously, I learned at least three things from your post. Thanks for posting it.
