This started as an attempt to make a simple 2” x 2” water mill that would fit inside a little house plant. It didn’t go as planed and morphed into this 6” x 7” building on a 10” x 10” base. So technically it is a “failure”, lol. But failure has never bothered me much. I still like it and have had fun photographing it. Now back to the original plan…
Drawn in Illustrator and cut from .125’ MDF, .06” MDF, .06 acrylic, 24 pt. Card-stock, and scrapbook paper. Ground cover and figures were store bought.
I can’t believe it was that small. The last picture put the size in perspective. Your design and paint job is so accurate that everything looked bigger. That was definitely not a failure.
I’d guess around 10-12 hrs. to draw everything and make sure it fit together. About 45 min. to cut everything and about 3 hrs. to paint and assemble.
The “bricks” are just score lines (maybe a little deeper than normal) in the wood. Two things that I’ve learned help with bricks. 1. When designing the file, concoct every other horizontal line so the laser doesn’t go back and forth without cutting anything. 2. Add tiny little cuts, maybe .04" lines, on the edges in between each brick.
Like this…
The bricks are all just painted with “spray paint”. I paint the whole thing Grey, then spray a light coating of Red, White, and Black. Painting is NOT my favorite part.
