So is it “select some nodes/anchors and apply a menu command” or “select a tool and mouse over the parts you want to smooth”?
The former. Not like the brush effect in AI.
I suppose nearly every system takes a slightly different approach. I particularly like the one in Blender that can keep the original compound curve but equalize the distance between nodes thus smoothing the design, Inkscape will distribute the nodes but the result will be a straight line.
I would love for someone to port the Blender concept to Inkscape. As both are opensource it is possible but beyond my personal skill set.
