Stark Industries Mk III helmet

I designed this Mk III helmet as a gift for a friend who is a huge Iron Man fan.

Made from maple, cherry, draftboard, and acrylic, it features a motion sensor on the base that lights up the blue acrylic eyes for a short while.

I made the helmet removable from the base, thinking of making an optional wall display, so a couple of small nails act as contacts to take power from base to helmet. I never made the hanger though. The bottom of the base is removable for battery access, the back of the helmet comes off to adjust the lights and wiring. Other scrapped plans, the acrylic “MK III” facing layer actually pokes down into the base, I was thinking of putting a light down there to shine into the facing layer and illuminate the text. But the lower bolts messed with the lighting so I scrapped that idea.

My friend loved the gift, but it freaked his wife out the first couple of times she walked past it on the shelf at night and the eyes lit up.

Wow! That is a pretty Stark job! Having light up is great too. That way when you walk past it, you know if someone is ahead of you.

Beautifully done!

I too know the pain of designing for a feature that just doesn’t quite work in final product :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

Thanks for taking the time to document it, these kinds of writeups take some effort. Very cool project.

Oh, very nicely done! I might also be freaked out by eys that light up when I walk by, but it is a very cool feature nonetheless.
