This should be simple

Diamond

Ok… this should be easy, but for the life of me I don’t seem to be getting there… I have this diamond image… I want all of the inside portions cut out and then the outside cut, if not it blows off my honeycomb. How can I break apart and svg to be able to have the outside cut last? I’ve been playing around in Inkscape, and Lightburn and in the GF app.

Am I missing some simple way to do this?

Just make the “outside” path a different color, and check the step order in the UI. Like so…

That’s what I was trying to do, but every time I tried to select just the outer edge it grabbed the whole line. I’m heading back to my YouTube training in Inkscape… or did you do that in Lightburn or Illustrator?

Thank you!

Inkscape:

Select the shape.

Ensure it’s not a group by reading the bottom of the window. It’ll say “1 object of type path selected” or something. Ungroup if it’s a group until it’s one path.

Select Path->Break apart. This separates all of the pieces of your path into their own path object.

Select the outside and change its color.

Inkscape. I use keyboard shortcuts but same as above - ⇧⌘K will break it apart, then unselect the outside piece ( ⇧-click ) then ⌘K to “combine” everything else (not necessary, but convenient). Then just change the color of one element or another…

Oh, I just realized - yeah, you have it filled so it’s harder to see, but if you turn off fill and set a thin stroke (I typicall use .1mm) then you’ll see the outline as shown.

You can set the line width to the width you want, then there is a command to make it two lines which makes it one object and if that is exploded you will have just 2 lines. Alternatively, you can just drop it in the GFUI and add an outline of a different part and cut the outline and just score the rest.(may need premium for this )

I may be absolutely wrong, but to me the simplest way would be to drag it onto the GFUI and simply make an “outline” of it with a “0” adjustment. I’ve done that with some designs before and it worked fine. Just set the outline to cut, while the original design is set to engrave.

Sorry that won’t do what was asked. The original post wanted to know how to cut all the shapes but leave the outline for last. You most likely need to edit the svg externally for that.

If the original svg was already separate paths to begin with you could theoretically do it in the UI but it’s definitely the long way and requires deleting the original shape after outlining or maybe ungrouping and cut/paste the outer shape as new step. (Tbh I can’t say for sure if this would work, but it sounds possible)

IMO it’s a better idea to get proficient with something like Inkscape and take advantage of its far more advanced and precise editing features. It’ll pay you back many times over.
