Tiger Maple Finishing Technique

I ran across this video and thought “I probably know people who use Tiger Maple, and know where to get iron nitrate gun stock stain.”

Wow Nice. There is a similar technique using just nitric acid. I haven’t tried it, but I am intrigued.
I have used Iron Acetate, (also known as: “Liquid Nightmare”) to blacken walnut pretty successfully. Iron acetate is easy to make. You just drop steel wool into vinegar for a few days. Just make sure that you put holes in the cover of the jar that you make it in. The guy that named it liquid nightmare did not and the jar exploded. I realize that people may think it’s crazy to “ruin” walnut, but I like the effect.

This is a photo of my Sister-in-law’s cat that I took and wanted to frame it to give to her. I used the Iron Acetate to create the black frame.
