Type of slate coasters to use?

Mostly, slate is slate. You can make it have slightly “better” results if the slate is sealed/treated before you engrave. you can buy them pre-sealed (they’ll look shiny) or you can buy them raw and do it yourself with mineral oil or shellac, both easily obtained.
