I was playing with a lightbox for the photo, but I still have a lot to learn. The heart is not quite that dark in person.
The colored words are engraved/cut from colored acrylic that was painted white (and dried) before going into the 
. They were then glued into engraved holes in the wood, so they are inset.
The wood was engraved as one piece, then the heart shape was cut out. Two different stains were applied, and then it was reassembled.
It is not perfect, but it was a fun learning experience.
