With Christmas around the corner and the big boss complaining about his busted wallet, I decided to make him one. And while I wouldn’t say I’ve mastered the art of shiny edge finishing in pretty happy with how this came out!
Got a hit it with some acrylic sheen to protect it but it came out pretty great!
So a few things you’ll need. A sanding block to get started , I started with 450, then micro mesh sanding pads going from 1500-12000.
Now some people might buy a burnishing slicker, or use a canvas, but if you have a lathe and or a rotery tool you can make your own, which is what I did with some spare cherry dowl I had, and used it in my universal chuck attachment on my Dremel.
You’re gonna start with doing that sanding block at 450, make sure the leather gets evened out, wet the end you are working with and then apply your first layer of tokonal and then hit it with the slicker/canvas/ rotery tool
Follow the same process (without the water) from 1500-3200 with the mesh pads, after 3200 however, toke isn’t going to help as it gets rather gummy and can cause some issues with our higher end grit mesh pads.
An optional thing I haven’t tried yet but supposedly it’s good, using parafin wax and a hot applicator gives it an almost mirrored finish of done right.
So fun fact, apparently my (this) wallet design is still in the Glowforge catalog even after requesting it be taken down….so if you have premium you can make it!
